Traditional spoon carving

Mal Barbado

It all starts with wood

The young Portuguese designer André Panoias lived and grew up surrounded by the traditions of his Alentejo, but it was only when he reached college that he began to look at the pastoral culture of this region with different eyes, namely the woodwork that the shepherds did informally when they went out with their herds. It was from this base that he started to specialize in the construction of special artifacts, namely handmade spoons. This workshop aims to show just that, how you go from a log to a fully functional spoon, created through a manual process that honors the rural roots of the Alentejo and uses surplus wood from Barrocal's olive trees.

Giving new life to tradition

Pastoral art, the main source of inspiration for this activity, is an age-old cultural expression. The shepherd, the central figure of this type of handicraft, is the creator of many of the models and shapes that can be known today through activities such as this workshop - from the spoon that expressed the passion for the woman he loved, to the rudimentary way in which it was safeguarded. health through the tasting spoons. Currently, because there are fewer shepherds, this ethnographic expression is on the verge of disappearing. It is therefore important to recognize its sensitivity, mastery and simplicity.
